Wire A Closet Light

Closet lights can be wired through a wall switch.

Closet lights can be wired through a switch in the wall, either inside or outside the closet, or they may have their own switch in the form of a pull chain. Either way, they should be attached to an electrical box attached to a rafter in the ceiling and the wall switch, if there is one, should similarly be mounted on a box nailed to a stud. If the wall is already finished, use remodeling boxes that mount directly on the drywall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the circuit before you begin. Run the circuit wire through the wall to the location of the light. If you plan on using a wall switch, run the wire to the switch location and run a separate wire from the switch to the light.

2. Feed these wires through a knockout hole in the boxes. If there are no boxes, install remodeling boxes by cutting holes in the drywall large enough for the boxes, setting them in the holes and affixing them to the drywall with the screw clamps on the boxes. Feed the wires through knockouts in the boxes before you place them.

3. Remove about 4 inches of sheathing from the end of the wire in the light box and the ends of the two wires in the switch box, using a utility knife. Remove about 1/2 inch of casing from all of the black and white wires with a splicing tool.

4. Connect the white wire of the lamp to the white wire from the house by holding the ends together so that they are parallel and twisting them clockwise with pliers. Screw on a wire connector. Repeat with the black wires. Twist the ground wires together and attach them to the electrical box if it is metal.

5. Mount the light on the electrical box, using the adaptor and screws that came with the light.

6. Twist the white wires in the switch box together and cap them. Attach the black wires to the brass screws on the switch or insert them into the clamp holes on the back of the switch, behind the brass screws. Twist the ground wires together and attach them to the switch box if it is metal.

7. Mount the switch on the electrical box, using the screws supplied with the switch. Make sure the switch is straight, then screw on the cover plate.
