Closet furniture can include chests, seating and even slide-out shoe storage.
Closets aren't just for hanging clothes anymore. Most master bedroom closets, at least in newer homes, are walk-ins. These provides a lot of extra space for getting dressed, ironing and even sitting and relaxing. Decide what functions you want your closet to perform, and then design your dream closet. 1. Decide what type of seating you want. If you just want to sit down to tie your shoes, then a simple stool or wooden chair will suffice. But if you are looking for luxury, try a huge round ottoman, upholstered in a rich fabric. If you can't fit the ottoman in, go for a long, upholstered bench. Should you want to relax in here, bring in a comfy lounge chair for the epitome of pampering. If you want a multi-functioning seat, try a unit that includes a flip-lidded "box" that holds dirty laundry, has a mirror backing on the top, and includes several vertically placed hooks for hanging pajamas and a pair of jeans that will be worn again.
2. Add in either a built-in chest or dresser or a free-standing one if you like to fold your clothes rather than hang them up. If you are fortunate enough to have room in the center, a two-sided dresser is ideal. A mirror on a stand, make-up supplies and jewelry boxes can be placed here for putting on the finishing touches. If there is no room in the center, a dressing table can be installed along the side, with a beautiful boudoir lamp placed on it. If you only want drawer storage, then place the chest on the side of the closet.
3. Add in other "furnishings" like a full-length mirror, a pull-down ironing board, pull-out pants hangers and shoe shelves, or a built-in laundry hamper.
4. Now measure your room and place the outside walls on the graph paper. Fill in the furniture you want first, then the hanging spaces. Start with the long-hanging rod first, allotting enough space for evening gowns, long robes, and straight-hanging pants. Then fill in with the short-hanging rods, either placing them on top of each other, with the lower rod hanging at 40 inches, and the upper rod at 80 inches, or with the lower rod and shelves and cubbyholes on top, so that you don't have to bend over to reach anything.
