Different Kinds Of Closet Shelf Dividers

Use an organizational tool to divide your closet shelf space.

The beauty of a closet is that you can shut the door and no one has to see your predilection for disorganization. The bad thing about a closet is that it can become an object lesson for your disorganization predilection. With just a few accessories, you can tackle the mess that is lurking behind the closet door and use shelf dividers to organize your things. Does this Spark an idea?

Upright Dividers

If you stack sweaters, towels or even papers on your closet shelves, the odds are fairly slim that they will remain perfectly stacked. Upright shelf dividers maintain order among your things. Once you choose the best option for your wire or solid shelves, fit the dividers onto the shelves and space them apart to an appropriate width. Place your clothes, towels, purses or other items neatly between the two dividers. When you need to add to or replace an item, it remains organized for later use.

Boxes and Baskets

For items that don't fold and stack neatly, such as hats, keepsakes or shoes, boxes or square baskets also divide your shelf space. See-through boxes are ideal for shoes, hats or items that require easy identification. Boxes that are not see-through are best for storing items that are out of season or aren't used very often. Square baskets or open boxes become bins for socks, gloves, mittens, scarves and slippers. Look for boxes and baskets that stack or nest so that you can maximize your closet space.

Low-Shelf Dividers

Lower closet shelves become a breeding ground for clutter, particularly if you have a habit of shoving everything into the closet to make the public spaces presentable. Organizer dividers are typically square or rectangular in shape and contain multiple divided sections. Depending on the size of the sections, you can store socks, under things, jewelry, coins, office supplies or makeup. If you invest in various sizes, you can effectively store a multitude of items next to each other, in appropriately sized containers.

Drawers

Depending on the depth of your shelves and the height between them, drawer units become shelf dividers that not only neatly organize the items in your closet, they hide away valuables. If space is at a premium, the drawers can become a hideaway catch-all for crafts, holiday items or toys, or they become home to papers you need later for your taxes or scrapbook. The drawer units also keep your delicates dust-free.
