Closet & Foyer Ideas

Use accessories to add color and warmth to a foyer.

Closets and foyers can be seen as spaces with little beyond practical use, places to take off shoes and coats and store clothes until they're needed next. For creative types though, they can be used to make a statement, showcase homespun design talent and making finding the perfect ensemble all the easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Sort Shoes

Organize shoes efficiently to maximize closet space while making footwear easy to find and access. Avoid having to search through shoe boxes for a certain pair by labeling each box with the style, color and designer. Alternately, take a Polaroid or print out a digital photo of the shoes and attach it to the side of the box. Consider purchasing a mini chest of drawers made from transparent plastic to store shoes in, making them possible to identify with a glance.

Make a Statement

Welcome guests into the home with a foyer that makes a statement using dramatic accessories and decorations. As the foyer makes a first impression on guests, use bold pieces as a means of expression. Incorporate oversize furniture in the foyer to create an eye catching centerpiece or decorate with colorful, patterned wallpaper, which works well in the small space of an entryway. If the house has an overall motif, use the foyer as a kicking off point, adding a few thematic items.

Add Hooks

Install hooks on the insides of closet doors to hold delicate items and assemble demo versions of potential outfits. Hooks can be used for garments with embroidery and beading, which should not be placed on hangers or hung alongside other items due to the risk of snagging and ripping. When assembling a new outfit, place items like skirts, tops and scarves on the hooks to see how they work together, switching and changing as needed.

Miscellaneous Foyer Ideas

Work with a foyer to create a warm, welcoming space, making it more than a space to pass through quickly. Install adjustable lighting in the foyer so it can be altered to suit mood, time and purpose. Bright lights can be handy when leaving on a dark winter morning, but a soft glow creates a cozy feeling when welcoming guests. Use a mirror to highlight attractive features on the other side of the room and add space and use small plants to give it life.
