Raise A Closet Flange

Toilet bowls sit on closet flanges, with a wax ring in between.

A closet flange is positioned under the toilet bowl, screwed to the floor, and is the first piece of the toilet sewer line. It is cylindrical in shape, and has a lip at one end that rests on the floor when in place. When new floor coverings are installed on top of old ones, larger sized wax rings can be used to seal between the toilet and flange. However, if the distance is still too large, 1/4-inch closet flange spacers (coming in kits) can be installed on top of the existing flange. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a putty knife to scrape off the old wax ring that rests on top of the existing closet flange. Thoroughly clean the flange with a rag to remove any remnants of the wax. Slide the existing vertical bolts out of each side of the flange by hand.

2. Rest the rubber gasket from the spacer kit on top of the flange, and slide the new bolts (also in the kit) into the slots on each side of the existing flange. Slide the spacer down onto the flange so that the vertical bolts pass through the notches on each side of the spacer. Note that the spacer has several holes around its rim that will line up with the screw holes in the existing flange.

3. Install 2-inch galvanized screws through the spacer holes and existing flange holes and into the bathroom floor. Use a screw gun. The wax ring and toilet can now be installed into place.
