Get The Most Money At Clothing Resale Shops

Donate any clothing you cannot sell at a resale clothing store to charity.

Many households are filled with clothing that either doesn't fit or is tragically out-of-style or that the owner is simply tired of wearing. Clothing resale, or consignment, stores will purchase the gently-used clothing by offering you cash on the spot or giving you a percentage of the money earned from the sale of the clothing once the item has been sold. There are several ways to prepare your unwanted clothing to help ensure you earn as much money as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look through all of the closets in your home and pick out any clothing that does not fit, you haven't worn in the last year or will never wear again. Look for clothing that is in fashion and features high-end or designer labels, as these are items are more attractive to resale shops. Skip the clothing that is three years or older and is no longer in style.

2. Lay the clothing out and examine it for any holes, stains, broken zippers or tears. Fix any broken zippers and reattach any lose buttons. If the clothing is noticeably stained or damaged, do not attempt to sell the pieces. The resale store will only purchase clothing that is in good shape. Check the pockets for any loose change, garbage or items that you don't want sold, such as an old identification card or other personal information.

3. Wash all of the clothing according to the label's directions. Launder jeans with other jeans, silk with silk, knits with knits and so on. This will ensure that delicate clothing does not become damaged or that any pills from sweaters do not land on your jeans.

4. Fold up any clothing that is not stored on hangers, such as t-shirts, jeans and shorts and place them into plastic storage totes. Do not throw the clothing into garbage bags as this will cause them to wrinkle, and make the store think the items are not high quality or have not been laundered.

5. Hang up any items on hangers that you would store in your closet, including sweaters, dresses and coats.

6. Call the consignment store to inquire about their policies. Some stores will only accept certain types of clothing, such as childrens or designer labels, and will have certain hours that they will purchase the pieces. Some shops require that you make an appointment to drop off items.

7. Take the clothing into the store. It will take several minutes or hours for all of the clothing to be examined. The resale store clerk will then give you the money for the clothing they purchase and give you back all of the pieces they are not interested in. Some stores issue a statement of each item that is being consigned and once the item has been sold will then pay you the amount you are due.
