Storage & Space Saving Ideas

Storage and space-saving ideas can help reduce clutter in your home.

You want an organized home, but you also want to keep all of your stuff. There is no need to rent a Dumpster if you are ready to implement some storage and space-saving ideas. Finding the problem areas and evaluating the usefulness of objects will get you started on the path to more efficient storage. Once you have decided on the spaces and materials that require organization, the next step is finding ideas that fit your storage needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelves and Cabinets

Building or buying shelves or cabinets can increase storage space. Consider every unused corner or wall for possible built-in storage, or purchase containers for specific materials. Stackable boxes, rolling carts and a variety of shelves are available in most department stores. Look for specialized storage units, such as vertical bike stands, wine racks, shoetrees and magazine holders. Furniture often can double as storage; footstools, benches, end tables and nightstands can open up for more space. A raised bed or couch with a dust ruffle also provides out-of-sight storage solutions for narrow containers.

Maximize Storage Space

Storage spaces can be reorganized to increase efficiency. In the kitchen, place dividers in drawers to separate items, wrap cords around appliances when they're not in use and place lesser-used objects behind the daily-use appliances. In the bedroom, double your closet space by installing a second rod at a lower position, and place a tie rack or shoe holder on the back of the door. Consider packing all oddly shaped or loose items into boxes for easy stacking and adding hooks for hanging belts or purses. In the garage, hang bicycles and canoes from the ceiling. Use pegboard to display tools on the wall, and coil extension cords and hoses onto large hooks.

Be Creative

Not every storage device must be used for its original intent. For example, a large bowl placed within reach of the entrance may be used to store car and house keys. Mail could be held upright in a napkin holder on the desk. Spare change and pens may go into separate mugs on the counter. Old food jars with lids can help organize nails, bolts, buttons or craft supplies.
