Replace A Sliding Closet Door

The functional elements of a sliding closet door can be adjusted, but damage to the door is often irreversible. The thin wood exterior of the hollow doors can be compromised by removing hardware from a mirror or frame. Replacing a damaged door can give your closet a fresh look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the closet doors. Pull one side of the outer door slightly upward and push the top toward the closet interior to slip the wheel off the track of the runner. Dislodge the wheel on the opposite side of the door in the same manner.

2. Grab both sides of the door and push upward until it clears the center divider on the floor. Pull the bottom forward and lower the door to clear the top runner, then pull it away from the frame. Use the same technique to remove the inner door.

3. Examine the floor divider and top runner. The central floor divider should have three slats that stand parallel to the closet doors, creating two slots that separate the doors and keep them from swinging. The runner should be straight with a clean track for the wheels to glide smoothly.

4. Replace the floor divider if it is damaged. Make pencil marks around the outline of the old divider, then remove the screws holding it to the floor. Place the new divider on the floor within the pencil marks. Drill pilot holes into the floor if the screw holes in the new divider do not line up with the existing floor holes. Secure the divider with the screws.

5. Replace the top runner if necessary. Remove the screws holding it to the top frame, then peel it away from the frame if it doesn't fall. Set the new runner in place and mark each screw hole that doesn't line up with an existing hole. Pull the runner away from the frame and drill pilot holes where needed. Set the runner in place again and drive a screw into each hole.

6. Set the new closet doors into the hardware. Hold the inner door by the sides and tilt it to place the upper section behind the runner. Push up on the door and set the bottom into the inner slot of the floor divider. Pull up on one side and snap the wheel into the inner track of the runner, then snap in the wheel on the opposite side. Repeat with the outer door.
