Spot A Fake Diesel Shirt

Look for the clues which distinguish legit Diesel shirts from fakes.

The decision to buy discounted Diesel shirts is a no-brainer for the thrifty shopper looking to grab designer duds. But what a bummer it would be to find that super cheap suave Diesel shirt, only to have someone call it out as a fake the first time you wear it out and about. With the advent of technology which allows crafty counterfeiters to knock off designer brands and labels with ease, almost every designer brand has started implementing techniques to distinguish legit products from fakes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look at the back of the label. In 1999 Diesel started inserting a micro-stitch (like that used in US currency) into the backs of their labels. When the label is held to the light, you can see the micro-stitch. The absence of this hallmark is the number one sign that the item you're considering is not a real Diesel shirt.

2. Know where the garment came from. 99% of all counterfeit Diesel merchandise comes from Asia. Until the mid-2000s, Thailand was the number one producer of knock-off Diesel products. In the latter half of the decade, China has taken the lead in counterfeit Diesel product production. If the shirt has sketchy origins, then it most likely is a fake.

3. Be familiar with the brand. Diesel is known for using high quality textiles, so if the shirt you're examining is made out of cheap-feeling material, it's a warning sign that it's a fake. The seams and stitching are also tell-tale signs of a counterfeit product. Diesel uses uniform thread and stitching, if the stitching is broken or doesn't match the garment it is most likely not a real Diesel. The pattern will match up on seams, or not be broken at all in a legitimate Diesel product and the logo will never be bisected by a seam.

4. Look at the label again. Diesel has had many incarnations of their logo and label since their inception in 1978. In determining a real versus counterfeit Diesel shirt, it is essential to be up-to-date on the current Diesel label being used by the company on product. One of the sneaky tricks counterfeiters will use to fool consumers is using old, dated brand labels bought up on the cheap from printers that legitimately work with the company in question after a brand logo change. Keep current on the Diesel line and company branding to avoid this gaff when looking for discount duds.

5. Know the current and past Diesel collections. If you are looking at a shirt labeled as Diesel that in no way, shape or form fits the Diesel design aesthetic, either you've gotten your hands on a designer prototype sample... Or, more likely, it's a fake Diesel.
