Do It Yourself Closets

Everyone needs more space in the closet but professional closet services can be expensive. Even a large closet can be dysfunctional if it's not organized and maintained. A smaller closet must be organized if it's to remain useful to the homeowner. You can organize your closet and keep it organized using items found in a store such as Kmart or Target. Does this Spark an idea?

Our Consumer Society

We are by nature consumers as Americans. All this buying and the storing of those things is what creates our troubles with closets and space for storage in our homes and especially apartments. Closet organization is key, but a consistent program of purging and donating will keep closets manageable.

Storage Organization

Closets need organization. Organization for most closets means partitioning the available space with the use of installed components such as shelving or by purchasing storage boxes and containers. You need the tools of organization whether organizing clothing or linens or household cleaning supplies in a personal or home closet. Buy storage containers of various sizes to use in all closet spaces in the home.

Clothing Closet

Separating closet sections into seasonal clothes is a smart organizing approach for clothes closets. Out-of-season clothes should be clean and stored in clear plastic storage boxes. All parts of an outfit should be stored seasonally together. Longer term cardboard storage trunks can also be used. Use mildew preventatives like cedar in trunks.

Linen Closet

Linen closets should be organized for easy accessibility to sets of bed linen and a general organized look to the homeowner's collection of towels, blankets and throw rugs. Designate specific areas of the linen closet for placement of bed linens, bath-size towels, and wash and hand towels. Blankets should be stored in blanket bags on highest shelves or on the floor in plastic containers.

Pantry or Food Closet

Organize your pantry or food storage cabinets by designating areas for like food products. Canned goods should be stored together and identical items stacked if space allows for easy retrieval. Use protective shelf covers that can be water cleaned and sanitize clean food storage areas at least quarterly or as needed..

Supplies Closet

Your pantry or household supplies closet should contain deeper storage containers where you can store gallon-size containers of cleaning products if needed, or have ample space for your arsenal of supplies for cleaning and laundry. These products may be harmful if swallowed and should be stored with children and pet safety in mind.
