Workbench Pegboard Ideas

Organize your tools with a pegboard workbench.

Turn that cluttered area around your garage workbench into a neat and well-organized work space with pegboard. Factory-punched boards make this a project that will render your work area easier to use and safer at the same time. Pegboard panels are available at your local lumber yard or home improvement center. Does this Spark an idea?

Pegboard Panels

Choose from unfinished pegboard products, or from a variety of finished products ready to install. Pegboard of tempered fiberboard is available in a natural brown or painted white finish. Steel panels in bright enamel colors make an attractive work area.

Hanging the Panels

Mount your panels with the correct hardware. Use molly bolts to hang the panels on gypsum board or wood backing. Screw the panels to the wall if you are able to locate the wall studs. Use spacing devices to provide clearance behind the panels for the fixtures. Be sure to use enough mounting hardware.

Customize It

Group tools of the same type together. Screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, squares, cutters, pliers, wrenches and drill sets make good groups. Make your workbench pegboard "right-handed" or "left-handed." Position tools you use most often close to the hand you use to handle each tool.

Odds and Ends

Store fasteners in bottles or bins.

Place tools on one panel or panel area. Arrange the things you use to make repairs in a separate area or on a separate panel. Dedicate an area for nuts, bolts, screws and similar items. Select fixtures with bottles for these items or with small baskets or bins attached. Choose fixtures with single prongs for items like electrical tape or hose washers. Hang long items like saws and levels at the outer edges of the panels.

Emergency Preparedness

Add an emergency battery center to your workbench.

Organize your emergency tools and supplies with pegboard. Provide bins for extra batteries by size. Store emergency lanterns, whistles, gloves and special items of clothing in bins or baskets. Hang special tools for turning off gas and water in clearly marked locations. Paint these tools bright red or yellow for instant recognition.

Garden Center

Hang garden tools on a separate pegboard.

Establish a second pegboard area near the garage door to your backyard. Hang your rakes, hoes, shovels and edging tools here, along with hoses and other things you use to maintain your yard.

Sports Center

Store baseball gear and other sports items on pegboard.

Create a center for family sports gear. Hang skis, boots, ski poles, water skis and tow ropes. This can be on an open side of the garage or in a sports cabinet with pegboard interior. Put footballs, volleyballs, baseballs and gloves in bags with drawstrings and hang them on hooks. Create a rack for bats and poles of various kinds.

Backyard Game Center

Organize your backyard games on a pegboard center.

Keep your backyard games on a pegboard center. Badminton sets, lawn darts, ring toss and other lawns games may be neatly organized here.
