Plan A Bedroom Suite

Most modern houses have taken large master bedrooms to a whole new level with expansive bathrooms, his and hers walk-in closets, large bedroom areas and sitting areas for relaxing at the end of the day. Though these cavernous spaces can be intimidating to tackle without the help of a professional decorator, a little bit of planning can make it easy to design a bedroom suite that will be beautiful, functional and perfectly suited to your style. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure each wall in the bedroom with the measuring tape, jotting down the dimensions and placement of windows, doors and wall outlets. Repeat this for each room or area of your bedroom suite, including the bathroom and closet.

2. Make a rough sketch of the shape of your rooms, and write the measurements you took next to the corresponding walls. This sketch will serve as a reference and allow you to double check your measurements.

3. Using a scale of two squares on the graph paper to equal one foot in your room, or a half inch to one foot ratio, transfer your measurements onto the graph paper. Be sure to mark the windows and doors.

4. Look through design books to find styles, fabrics and furniture that catch your eye. Figure out your furniture needs for each space, considering sleeping, sitting and storage needs. Visit furniture stores to narrow down your choices, and measure each piece of furniture you consider purchasing.

5. Transfer the measurements of the furniture pieces you are considering to graph paper using the same scale as before. Cut out the pieces of "furniture" and use them to plan the room. Since the pieces are made to scale and easily movable, you can work out a practical floor plan without purchasing furniture that may not work in the space. Consider where wall outlets are located when you plan locations for reading lamps, clocks or other electronic items.

6. Decide on the furniture pieces that suit your space, and purchase those items. Choose a design scheme that coordinates with the style of furniture you selected, and pick out bedding, accessories, lighting and curtains. Carry the theme into the bathroom to tie the spaces together.

7. Use the dimensions of the closet to design a workable storage solution that meets your clothes and storage needs. Purchase and install organizational items for that space.
