Organize A Small Home

If you live in a small home you know how difficult it can be to find room to fit everything and still have enough living space. For some people they don't have the money to upgrade and buy a bigger home. For others they may love the house or neighborhood and not want to move. There are ways to organize a small home and make the most of the space you have. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Get rid of what you don't use, wear or need. If you have a small home you likely won't have room for everything. Clean out all closets, garages and drawers. Consider donating items you never use or have a big garage sale. The less you have the easier it will be to organize.

2. Have a place for everything. Use baskets, shoe boxes and milk crates to store items such as crafts, pictures, keepsakes and seasonal items. Clean out desks regularly to get rid of unneeded paperwork. Designate a shelf or closet for particular items. Teach children to put things back where they got them to keep things organized.

3. Throw away magazines and newspapers as soon as you read them. Throw away junk mail and advertisements as soon as they come in. Keep a box for bills, invitations and mail you need to keep. This helps keep a small home less cluttered and easier to organize.

4. Give kids stackable cubbies in their room to keep toys, books and games. Keeping kid's rooms organized may be a challenge, but it can be done. Have storage containers within a child's reach for cleanup. Store games under a bed. Put in shelves for books and awards.

5. Create more space by converting the garage into a living space. It may be easier to organize a home if you add more space. A garage can be turned into office space, a play room or exercise area. Adding flooring and central heat and air may be needed.

6. Use space saving storage containers such as collapsible bags that are airtight for items you use seasonally. Use shoe racks you can hang on the back of a door. Select furniture which is multifunctional such as a bed which has drawers underneath or an ottoman which opens up to provide storage.

7. Consider putting a storage shed outside. Make room in the garage by placing items for lawn care in the shed. Tools, sports equipment and holiday decorations can also be put away in an outside shed.
