Organizing a closet is less daunting when you have a plan.
If you have an exceptionally messy closet and no idea go about getting things in order so that it can be functional again, then pulling everything out all at once might not be the best idea or the most effective tactic. First, come up with a closet organizer plan. Decide what you want to do with the space, figure out what you want to keep in it, and gather the supplies you need to get the closet in order. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Take inventory of everything you have in the closet, or what you think you have in it. As you do so, start coming up with categories, such as sweaters, boots, sandals, jackets, shorts, linens, belts, ties and hats.
2. Gather the hangers you need for the various types of clothes you plan to hang in the closet. These can include standard clothes hangers, felt-lined clamp hangers and sloped hangers.
3. Purchase plastic storage bins with drawers to store items like sweaters, socks and ties. Sweaters should never be hung, because it can damage the material. Ties should be rolled up lengthwise and tucked neatly into the drawer.
4. Get a shoe rack. The rack can be used for all sizes and types of shoes. It keeps them off the floor of your closet and helps maintain your shoes so you can wear them longer.
5. Toss some items out of your closet. You can use the plastic storage containers to organize clothing accessories, and you can stack linens and towels on the top shelf. However, things you don't use on a daily basis, like yearbooks, boxes of photos, old magazines or clothes you'd like to fit into someday are probably better off in the attic than your closet.
