Your clothes should have a great home in your clothes closet. There are several steps that you can follow to take your regular closet and make it into a great clothes closet for yourself. It is important to finish a clothes closet correctly, so it can provide you with a space to store your clothing. Does this Spark an idea?
Flooring
Finish the flooring of your clothes closet. The flooring can be made up of any material, but should be a material that is easy for you to clean, as you want your closet to stay neat and tidy. A nice low pile carpet works well, but so does a wood floor. Many people who have wood floors in their closets prefer to put a nice rug on the bottom of the floor of the clothes closet in order to stack shoes or boxes that you don't want to have slide around on the floor.
Walls
Finish the walls of your clothes closet. You can use regular paint for these walls, just make sure that the paint is dry before you put up shelving or load the closet. Make sure that you use a lead free paint that is non toxic, even though this is just a closet. This is because you never know when your children or pets will be in your closet, and you cannot use toxic paint on any part of your home during construction.
Shelving
Finish your closet by putting up the proper shelving for clothes. A clothes closet should have room for all different types of clothes in it. First, hang a rod or bar across the top of your closet. This is going to be the place where you hang clothing on hangers. For many people, this should be the most important part of your closet, because you might have many different pieces of clothing to hang up.
Hang the rod or clothes bar at about 5 feet high in the closet. The space above the rod or closet bar should be used for shelves. Depending on the height of your closet itself, you can fit one, two, or more shelves above the bar. Your shelves should be at least four inches above your closet bar, and can be spaced however you would like them to be, depending on your needs.
Install shelving along the sides of your closet, or on the floor of your closet. Again, these depend on your own preferences, as they are going to be the shelves that you use for sweaters, shoes and other types of clothing. Just make sure that shelves on the floor of the closet will not go so high as to be hidden by any long garments hanging above it.
