Donate Computers In New Jersey

National and local charities accept computer donations.

When you upgrade from your old computer to a new one, you may be wondering what you can do with the older machine. If you are in New Jersey, you can donate your old computer to a local or national charity in your area. Donating your computer allows you to take a tax deduction, as long as you donate to a charity that is listed with the IRS. For your deduction, you can claim the fair market value of the computer. This is described by the IRS as the price someone would pay for the computer in the current market.

Instructions

1. Go to the IRS charities database (see Resources) to make sure you are donating to a place that is eligible for tax deductible donations. If you don't have a charity picked out yet, you can search for one by name, city or state. National and local New Jersey charities, such as Goodwill and the National Cristina Foundation, accept computer donations in New Jersey.

2. Assess the fair market value of your computer before donating it. Check the value on the Usedprice. com (see Resources) as well as looking for similar items for sale in your local New Jersey newspaper classified ads. If you get amounts that vary, you can add them together and divide by the total number of values to get the average.

3. Gather all of the accessories, cords and disks that go with the computer. Power on the computer to make sure it works because charities typically only accept working computers.

4. Take your computer to the New Jersey charity that you have chosen. Some charities, such as the Dell and Goodwill Reconnect partnership (see Resources), have drop-off locations listed on their websites. You can also use a company such as Computers with Causes (see Resources), which gets your computer to the charity, to make your donation. Make sure you get your donation receipt before leaving.
