Build An Organized Closet

Effective closet organization can help you keep track of your treasured possessions.

Building an organized closet is about making effective use of space and choosing the right components to fit your storage needs. What makes an organized space is largely dependent on what it is you're trying to organize; if you have sufficient small containers for small items and sufficient room for large items, organization will come down to an arrangement that provides for easy access to everything. Taking stock of what you have, what you need and determining your organizational goals will make the task run smoothly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the contents of your closet. Divide your items into three piles: closet, storage and recycle. The items you want to keep but don't need immediately go into storage; those you want to donate to charity go into the recycle pile. The items you use frequently will be placed back into your newly organized closet.

2. Analyze the items you'd like to keep. Determine what kind of closet organizational tool is best for each item. Shoes might go best on a shoe rack; suits hung from hangers; sweaters folded into drawers or on shelves. Several small items, such as clothing accessories, might go best in small drawers.

3. Draw a sketch of your closet area. Make your sketch to scale by first measuring the size of your closet. Include a plan of the components you'd like to include and where they should be placed. You might choose to install a shelf above a rod to hang clothing. The rod may take up only half the length of the closet, secured at the wall at one end and a closed-door cabinet at the other.

4. Decide on the appropriate components for your new closet. You can purchase a wire, plastic or wooden shoe rack; plastic free-standing drawers; a particle-board cabinet with doors that close inside the closet, among other options. Be prepared for the measurements of your closet space to make sure the components fit.

5. Install the components in your closet. Place all of the emptied items back into your newly built organized closet. Rearrange the items and components as necessary for an effective layout that allows you to access items quickly when you need them.
