Take Closet Factory Drawers Apart

Disasemble factory drawers with care to avoid damaging critical components.

Whether for refurbishing, repair or maintenance, you may need to dismantle the drawers of your factory-made furniture at some point. Although manufactured furniture comes in a stunning variety of styles, the basic construction of these pieces is generally the same, meaning that regardless of the builder, the general method for taking your drawers apart will be the same. Methodically dismantling your drawers will minimize the risk of damage and make the reassembly process significantly easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the drawer. Pull the drawer all the way to the front of its tracks and press upward to free the drawer. If your drawer does not release, check the area around the circular bearings. Some drawers have safety tabs which must be flipped up before the drawer can pull free.

2. Unscrew any hardware from the drawer. Drawer pulls are typically attached with a Phillips-head screw on the inside face of the drawer front. Tracks and guides along the sides of the drawer are usually mounted with screws along the exterior of the drawer sides.

3. Find the screws holding the drawer front in place, which are typically located in the front, inside corners of the drawers. Unscrew these screws and remove the front of the drawer.

4. Slide the bottom panel out through the front of the drawer. The bottom panel is typically secured with grooves in the sides, front and back of the drawer, and is usually not held in place with screws, staples or glue.

5. Separate the sides of the drawer from the back. The back is typically anchored to the sides with exterior facing screws. Depending on the manufacturer, these screws can be located either on the back or on the sides of the drawer.
