Closet Space Saver Projects

Utilize closet space from floor to ceiling to eliminate clutter and stay organized.

Cleaning out a messy closet is undeniably dreadful. Forget monsters: conquering closet clutter often fronts as an insurmountable task. However, don't let the imposing threat of your closet intimidate you. Following a few space-saving procedures and utilizing these nifty organizational tips will quell your closet fears for good. Does this Spark an idea?

Hanging Space

Closets get cluttered when they become over-stuffed with items no longer in use. Sort through items and identify which articles of clothing are serving a purpose or are just a waste of space. Donate unwanted items to charity and rehang wearable clothing in a more organized fashion. A good rule of thumb is to move clothing that is not being worn this season to the back of the closet or store it in bins on your closet's uppermost shelf. Place foldable items in a dresser instead of the closet to conserve more space. Space bags can store items that don't see frequent use, and space saver hangers tier hanging levels to maximize storage. Create your own space-saving hanger by attaching an s-link to a linked chain and hanging it over your closet rod. Hook hangers through the chain links' loops to achieve a tier effect. This will increase your closet's hanging capacity noticeably. In addition, use non-slip hangers whenever possible to prevent clothing from ending up on the closet floor.

Shelving Space

Sentimental items, linens, sweaters, purses and accessories can be stowed away discreetly while remaining easily accessible. Stackable shelving units are a practical storage alternative for closets lacking shelving space or cubby holes. Install see-through, pull-out drawers and never sift through mounds of clutter again to dig for lost items. If wall space is sparse, purchase a hanging shelving unit. Hanging shelving units consist of cube-shaped, vertical compartments made of canvas material. There is no assembly required and they fold for simple storage when not in use. Shoes, bags and other bulky items can stay within reach without contributing to clutter.

Door Space

If adding storage units to your closet is not feasible, utilize closet door space instead. Even tiny closets can benefit from over-the-door hangers or storage racks. Bulky outerwear, such as coats and belts, are difficult to keep on hangers. Install a coat rack on the interior or exterior of your closet door for easy access to coats, jackets, hats, scarves and belts. Shoes spread about the closet floor looks disheveled. Install an over-the-door shoe rack to keep pairs of shoes from becoming separated and scattered.
