New Closet Ideas

Accent closet doors with eye-catching, contrasting hardware.

If you're looking to remodel or redecorate a room that will also help keep you organized, consider a new closet. Assess your needs and its primary purpose beforehand, then go from there. In addition, Apartment Therapy says you should "treat your closet like a small room. Pay attention to lighting, wall color and floor coverings." Does this Spark an idea?

Dainty Linen Closet

Overhaul your linen closet by organizing and folding everything afresh. Plenty of shelving insures no stuffing and cramming. Add some paper lace trim to the bottom of each shelf for an elegant, inviting effect. Use baskets and hatboxes for linens you won't use in the next few months. To keep things neat, label your shelves using plastic label holders that slide into grooves on the shelf's face. This way, everyone knows where it all goes, and you can maintain your new, fresh linen closet.

Container Closet

To cut down on clutter and create a more appealing space, incorporate containers into your new closet. Some small, vintage suitcases and hatboxes from your local thrift shop hold out-of-season clothes (or hats, for that matter), and you can use them to create a color scheme for your closet. If you want to see the containers' contents, use boxes organized by size. You might also use labeled file boxes on a rolling cart for larger, walk-in closets. A small, stackable and easy-to-carry hamper allows you to store and move your laundry with ease.

Kid's Closet

Brighten up your little one's room with a "Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" closet with an armoire frame and double-doors. Add mirrors on the insides of the doors, paint it a bold color and you've got an enchanting closet for your child to store all her adventuring dress-up gear in. For a locker-inspired closet, have your child start picking out clippings (from magazines, postcards --- anything that inspires him) and create a collage on his closet door (inside and out). Encourage your kid to incorporate things he's passionate about, like hobbies or extracurricular activities.

Custon Closet Doors

If you're creating a new closet, don't leave out the closet door. You don't have to leave it plain and simple. Paint a hinged closet door black and accent it with white or light-blue trim for a dramatic focal point. To save space and add some texture, forgo the door all together and hang a panel or two of fabric that complements your decor scheme. If you're ambitious, install double doors with colorful stain glass or a closet with a chalkboard surface (especially appropriate for a child's room). If you want a simple DIY fix, decoupage a roll of patterned wrapping paper on your closet doors.
