Organize A Teenage Boy'S Closet

The thought of going anywhere near a teenage boy's closet is a scary one for many parents. Those brave enough to enter could give a teenage boy a sense of order with a thorough cleaning and some organization. The process also gives you a chance to get rid of old clothes. Beyond simply organizing it, customization techniques can make the closet reflect his personality. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closest. Ask the teen to sort through the clothes and accessories. What items are still useful? Which ones can find a new home elsewhere? Avoid throwing out anything yourself; he may become upset if you throw out something he likes.

2. Sort the remaining clothes by style, type or season. For a teenage boy, the typical contents of his closet are likely T-shirts, jeans, slacks and a few dressier shirts. Color-coding may be a tempting initial organization system. But the chances of a teenage boy maintaining that system aren't great. Dividing the closet by type of clothing is easier to maintain.

3. Install a closet organization system that works well with the types of clothes he has in his closet. If most of his clothes are short, upper and lower bars for hanging clothes can give him more space. A row of shelves is ideal for sweaters and other clothes that need to be folded. Additional hooks and storage baskets provide storage for smaller items.

4. Place all of the items back in the closet using the new organization system.

5. Consider adding a built-in desk inside a walk-in closet if the teenage boy has room to spare. This saves space in the bedroom while giving him a private work space for studying or pursuing his hobbies.

6. Add personality to the closet by giving the door a makeover. Paint the door to reflect his personality or remove the door and add themed curtains to the closet opening.
