Build A Fashionable Wardrobe For The Office

A stylish, professional wardrobe doesn't have to break the bank.

Building a professional, yet stylish office wardrobe is essential for any woman who spends a great deal of her waking life on the job. If you're just starting out, build your office wardrobe around a few key pieces with pops of color coming from accessories. Add to your wardrobe as you go along instead of buying everything in one shopping spree.

Instructions

1. Have at least two suit skirts in neutral colors such as black, gray and navy blue. These skirts serve as a base for any color blouses or shells you wish to wear underneath. Get these suits tailored to fit you right. These suits may be mixed and matched with other separates such as pants and cardigans in coordinating colors like a chocolate brown blazer paired with the navy blue skirt. Suits are essential for meeting clients or going on other interviews.

2. Get one tailored just-for-you pantsuit in a neutral color. Mix and match the pantsuit the same way you would a skirt suit.

3. Own three or four professional dresses. Wrap dresses or shift dresses reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy and the ladies of "Mad Men" are perfect for the office. Tweeds, houndstooth patterns, belted dresses and solid colors are all good choices. Throw on a cardigan or a blazer over the dress. Skirts and dresses should ideally be knee length for a demure and professional look.

4. Have one or two additional blazers that aren't a part of a suit. Three or four colorful cardigan sweaters are must-haves for chilly offices.

5. Shirts and blouses give you the opportunity to add color to neutral skirts and pants. Office clothing can be drab, but you may show off your personality by adding your favorite bright colored shirts. Although, owning two or three button down, menswear-style shirts in white or French blue are essential for suits.

6. Add accessories that show off your personality. A brightly colored scarf or a great pair of shoes can update an outfit. Own several pairs of shoes that are well-made and comfortable to wear all day. Select low or kitten heels that make it easy to walk, while still giving you some height. Ballet flats or leather loafers are all classic styles for the office. Get a nice, leather tote that works for all seasons and all outfits. Don't wear knee high boots with suit skirts.
