Build a Freestanding Closet


Building a freestanding closet may be done in an afternoon with the proper materials and tools. The most economical is a closet made from plywood in a basic rectangular shape. This type of closet may be embellished with detail according to individual taste. The basic design is simple yet sleek. Plans may be found at local lumber yards and home improvement centers. Instructions


Assembly


1. Cut one sheet of plywood to 4 by 6 feet. Cut the second sheet of plywood to 4 feet by 6 feet 3/4 inches. Save both ends.


2. Cut the 4-by-6-foot piece of plywood in half lengthwise, leaving two pieces, each 2 by 6 feet.


3. Cut 1 1/2 inches off the 4-foot-by-1-foot-11 1/4-inch piece of plywood bringing the dimensions to 1 foot 11 1/4 inches by 3 feet 10 1/2 inches.


4. Stand the 2-by-4-foot piece of plywood on edge placing the 4-foot length on the floor (top). Brace to hold until the next section has been added. Stand the 2-by-6-foot piece of plywood on edge placing the 6-foot length on the floor (side). Match up the edge of the top and side, making sure the top overlaps the side. Secure approximately every 6 inches. Start at the top edge and work down.


5. Place the 1-foot-11 1/4-inch-by-3-foot-10 1/2-inch piece of plywood inside the bottom of the closet structure. Secure approximately every 6 inches. Place the back on top of the rectangular structure. Secure approximately every 6 inches.


6. Stand the closet up. Sand the raw edges and any rough spots on the closet. Stain if desired.


7. Measure 1 foot from the front of the closet and 6 inches down from the top. Make a mark at the junction. Secure the closet rod holders by centering them on this mark. Place the closet rod in the holders. Place the curtain on the tension rod and hang.
