Make A Fabric Storage Box Template

Make a variety of fabric storage boxes with your shoebox.

Making different size boxes for your crafting, scrapbooking as well as home office supplies generally starts with a basic template. Although decorative paper stores sell pre-decorated boxes, using an old shoebox as your pattern guide will help you create a variety of storage box sizes. By scoring and cutting open the shoebox at each end, you will be able to make a tracing of the flat box. The lid will follow the same format. Make a variety of decorative fabric storage boxes by tracing your finished template. Decorate the lid with accessories such as fabric flowers or ribbons.

Instructions

1. Score the shoebox at the four corners with a scoring tool. Carefully cut into the scored box with a crafting knife. You will have four open flaps.

2. Trace around your panels onto card stock with your drafting pencil or marker in your desired storage box dimensions. Use a ruler to define the lines. For instance, if your shoebox measures 8 by 10 inches, use it as your base and make a storage box 14 by 16 inches.

3. Draw an extension flap on each side of the top and bottom panel approximately ½ inch in width. You will be folding over the extension flap to connect the box flaps together. You will not be cutting the flaps away.

4. Place your template on your cutting board and cut it out with your crafting knife.

5. Repeat steps 1 though 4 to create the box lid template.

6. Score the extended flaps as well as the bottom panel base from the box and lid lightly to complete your fabric storage box template.
