A closet bar hanger, also called a closet rod, is an essential part of any good closet design, allowing for storage of ironed clothes, coats, jackets and pants without creasing or crinkling them. If your closet doesn't already have a hanger, then you can easily make your own and install it. You can source all the materials from your local lumberyard, but make sure you purchase lumber with a strong weight-bearing capacity to hold up all your clothes. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the width of the closet, which is the length your hanger will need to be. Cut a length of 1-inch-thick wood dowel to this measurement, using a saw. Sand the dowel piece so it is smooth and snag-free.
2. Cut two pieces of 1-inch by 3-inch lumber to 3 inches long so you have two 3-inch by 3-inch squares that are 1 inch thick.
3. Attach a 1-inch hole saw bit to your drill and cut a hole in the center of each of the 3-inch by 3-inch squares, which will be the hanger wall braces.
4. Slide the braces over each end of the dowel. Mark the position on either side of the closet where you want the bar hanger to go. Typically it should be centered and approximately 5 or 6 inches from the top of the closet for full-length clothes hangers.
5. Slide the dowel into the closet and place one end over one mark on the side; slide the brace down the dowel so it is flush with the closet wall. Have a assistant place the other end on the mark on the other side of the closet. Hold a level on the dowel and adjust as needed so it hangs perfectly level.
6. Drill a countersunk pilot hole sized to fit a 3-inch wood screw into each corner of the hanger wall brace, while your helper holds the other side in position.
7. Drive a 3-inch wood screw into each pilot hole to attach that side of the bar hanger. Repeat on the other end of the dowel with the other brace to complete your homemade closet bar hanger.
