Design And Remodel Closets

Good planning makes any item easy to find within a closet.

Spacious and well-organized closets are a huge asset to any home. Well-planned closets increase the desirability of the house, especially if it's up for sale. But, nice closets make everyday living much easier for the whole family. Take time to design how you will store items in each closet, so that finding any item will be relatively easy at a moment's notice. Create a visually appealing storage system by planning baskets, bins, hangers and shelving within each closet. Every closet space needs these types of organizational tools to work well over time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure each room before planning closet space. Figure the maximum floor space for the closet, but create the door system to conserve space. Install sliding closet doors in a bedroom, for example, instead of putting up folding doors if space is tight.

2. Design the exterior of the closet first. Use graph paper to draw the layout and dimensions. Create the closet to fit along one entire wall of a bedroom, for example. Figure out ways to install crown molding around the ceiling that continues around the top of the closet. Select sliding doors with mirrored fronts, if this is appropriate.

3. Determine the interior dimensions you will have once drywall is finished. Use graph paper to lay out the hanging rods, shelving and drawers within a closet. Plan every square inch on paper, so the closet functions exactly as it is designed. Make sure the doors will open wide enough to easily expose the interior.

4. Install interior recessed lighting and finish drywall surfaces. Lay baseboard material inside the closet, too. Add shelving, rods and any closet system materials after the closet and baseboards are fully painted. Use baskets, bins and storage shelving in pale or neutral colors, so the storage systems look harmonious and neat.

5. Add carpet or tile. Finish the closet flooring to tie the whole space together. Use beige carpet with beige walls, for example, for a cleaner look. Use the carpet in the entire room, if this is appropriate, so the flooring extends into the closet seamlessly when doors are fully open.
