Closet Rod Placement Recommendations

Closet poles are hung at many different heights.

When building a new closet or installing new closet rods, hang the rod at the proper height. No hard and fast rules exist among professionals for hanging closet rods, but there are typical installation heights for the rods. Hanging them at a level that is easy for you to reach and that allows proper storage of your clothing is the ideal way to determine what height is right for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Standard Heights

The standard height for hanging your average closet rods in a bedroom closet is 45 1/2 inches, which gives plenty of room above and below the rods for storage options like shelving or cabinets above the rods. Since clothes are accessed most often, this height is convenient. Almost anyone can easily reach out and grasp the clothing hangers. Meanwhile, almost any clothing item will hang with plenty of room under it, so the garment does not touch the floor.

Long Garment Rods

The height of the closet rod also depends on what you plan to store in the closet. For longer garments like trench coats or dresses, install the rod at a height over 60 inches. A height of 65 inches hangs nearly any garment with room to spare below. Measure the garments first if you are unsure about their height, and hang the rod 5 or 6 inches above the longest one. However, do not hang the rod higher than your own height. If only one garment is really long, hang it from a separate hook; otherwise you will have to reach to take down all your garments.

Storage Options

Sometimes adding more storage to the closet is more important than hanging a closet rod at the appropriate height. For instance, having more accessible shelves over the rod makes use of more space in the closet. Hanging a rod at 39 1/4 inches allows more space for shelving right on top of the rod. The clothing hung on the rod, including shirts and pants, will not drag on the floor. If your pants length is 32 inches, and you hang pants on a clip hanger from the waist band, the cuff will not drag on the floor at this height. If your pants are longer, you might hang the rod a little higher.

Double Rods

Another option is to use double closet rods, or one rod hung on top of the other like ladder rungs. This doubles your storage space and allows plenty of room for hanging both shirts and pants on either rod. The top rod will be higher up in the air, however. These rods are often hung at 80 1/4 inches and 39 1/4 inches. If you are above average in height, move the closet rod on top up higher to allow more space for longer garments and coats. Always consider your height when hanging any top level double-level rod. If it is not easily accessible, you will not use the upper rod as much, and therefore it becomes wasted space.
