Build A Storage Cabinet With A Prefinished Door

Building a cabinet with prefinished doors makes the job easier.

Using a pre-finished door as a part of your storage cabinet project is a great way to ensure the final product will have an attractive appearance at its most visible portion. The process of creating the cabinet is made somewhat easier when using a prefabricated door attachment, as these doors often come with hinges or at least drilled holes for hinges. The size of this door predetermines the size of your cabinet. The steps for the creation of this storage cabinet can be adjusted to accommodate any size of pre-made door, and require only basic equipment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the door. Use this distance minus 1/2-inch as the height of your side boards. Mark out the dimensions of two side boards on a 3/4-inch sheet of plywood, making the length this distance and the width your desired cabinet depth. Cut out these two side boards with a saw.

2. Measure the width of your door. Use this distance as the width of your top and bottom boards, and the previously determined depth of the cabinet as the length of your top and bottom boards. Mark the dimensions for these two boards on a 3/4-inch sheet of plywood and cut them out with a saw.

3. Lay the two side boards out on the sides that will eventually face the front of the cabinet, standing them upright and parallel to each other with the help of an assistant. Position the top board against their ends so that the three boards make a U shape.

4. Set 1-inch metal L-brackets along each board joint on the inside of the U, spacing the brackets every 6 inches. Mark the screw holes of each bracket, remove the brackets and drill out the holes. Attach the brackets in place with 3/4-inch wood screws. Repeat on the other end of the side boards to attach the bottom board.

5. Measure the height and width of this assembled frame and cut out a piece from the 3/4-inch plywood sheet that matches these dimensions. Set this board, which is the rear board, on the working surface and put the assembled frame on top of it. Set 1-inch metal L-brackets every 6 inches along the interior of the frame between the frame and the rear board. Mark the screw positions, remove the brackets, drill out the holes and install the brackets with 3/4-inch wood screws.

6. Position the pre-finished door on the front of the frame. Mark the spots where the hinges land on the side board of the cabinet. Remove the hinges and drill out the holes. Attach the hinges in place with 3/4-inch wood screws.
