Closet Storage Ideas

Closet storage

Closets are by design storage spaces, but maximizing closet space takes some planning. Without organization, a closet can become a "catch all" for everything that needs to be out of sight. Today's fast-paced and busy lifestyles demand more organization of everyday items that have to be within easy reach. Closets play an important role in meeting this demand, and effective closet storage will help bring organization to some of the most overlooked areas of our homes. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelves

If you have more than one extra closet in your home, designate them for specific things. One can be for out-of-season clothing, another for coats and yet another for miscellaneous items.

Add as many shelves as you can to your closet because almost anything can be stored on shelves. Shelves instantly increase the square footage of your closets, increasing the amount of space you can use to store your items.

Shoe Storage

Shoes take up less space when neatly arranged in rows than a pile of disorderly shoes. Besides, it's a waste of precious time having to look for a missing shoe. Shoe shelves will help to keep your shoes from getting smashed or dirty from the soles of your other shoes. Maximize your closet space with the addition of shoe shelves. If your closet has a depth of more than two feet, then that will allow each shelf to hold two rows of shoes.

Shoe shelves can be conveniently located at the bottom of your closet. Many clothing items do not hang all the way to the floor, so these shelves will make good use of this space. Shoe shelves can also be installed along the two sides of your closet, or even in the middle where it can act as a narrow divider between your clothes racks.

Baskets and Bins

Use large baskets and bins to sort your belongings by type. Once everything is sorted and in the proper storage container, place these baskets or bins neatly on your closet shelves. Use labels or tags to mark what's inside so that you no longer have to hunt for your belongings.

Drawers

Drawers are another feature to add to your closet's storage. They are a good place to store what you want to keep out of sight, as well as a neat way to contain your socks and other small garments. Install the drawers where it will be easy to see what's inside. Drawers that are installed too high will require a step stool to access them, and that will certainly take away from your closet's functionality.

Hamper

Unless your clothes are severely soiled after a hard day's work, your closet is a good place to keep a clothes hamper. Having a clothes hamper in the closet means it is conveniently located where you change your clothes. Also, with the hamper hidden in your closet, it is no longer a bathroom or bedroom eyesore. There are many styles to choose from, including built-in units that coordinate with a closet system or stand-alone hampers of many different styles.
