Geologists apply their expertise in geological processes and earth materials to practical analysis of building sites and other land parcels. They often work for geological testing firms or environmental consulting companies. Virginia requires any person who practices in the profession to hold a certification from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Board of Geology. Certification requires minimum qualifying university training, significant job experience under the supervision of a certified geologist and a passing score on a certification exam.
Education
Many certified geologists hold at least a bachelor's degree in geological sciences, though 30 semester hours of geology coursework at an accredited college will suffice for certification in Virginia. You must complete at least 12 semester hours in four of the core courses, choosing from stratigraphy, structural geology, mineralogy, paleontology, petrology and geomorphology. Most universities in Virginia offer qualifying degrees and coursework, though coursework completed at accredited colleges and universities outside Virginia is acceptable.
Work Experience
Certification also requires seven years of geological work experience, including a minimum of three years under the supervision of a certified professional geologist or three years in a position with responsibility for carrying out geological work. Ultimately, the state's geology board will determine the adequacy of your work experience. Undergraduate and graduate study in geological sciences may qualify for partial work experience credit.
Application
After completing the required coursework and work experience, you must submit an application for examination and licensure. Download a certification application and a work experience log form from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation website. You must have your former supervisor or employer complete detailed descriptions of your work experience. After processing your application materials, an exam authorization notice will be issued to you by PSI Services, a private testing company under contract with the department.
Examination
Certification candidates must schedule a licensing exam as instructed in the exam authorization notice. Exam sites are in Falls Church and Richmond. The examination includes two four-hour components, a fundamental theory component and a practical methodology aspect. You may not refer to any manuals, texts or notes during the examination. After passing the exam, a professional geologist certification will be issued to you.
