Disassemble A Moen Tub Faucet Cartridge

disassemble a Moen tub faucet to replace a valve cartridge.

Removing an old Moen tub faucet cartridge can be done with pliers and a screwdriver. Corrosion can make it difficult to loosen the old valve cartridge. Your new valve replacement kit includes a white plastic removal tool that is inserted on the valve and turned with pliers to loosen the valve cartridge and making it easy to remove. Most parts of a Moen faucet are held in place by a screw except the cartridge which is secured with a clip. Disassembling a Moen tub faucet to replace the valve cartridge requires basic skills and no special tools.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water supply to the faucet. Use a flat head screwdriver to gently pry off the decorative plastic cap taking care not to score or damage the plastic. Not every Moen model has a plastic cap.

2. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw on the handle and pull the handle off the faucet.

3. Unscrew the screws that hold the trim in place and remove it from the wall. Slide off the metal sleeve that covers the valve if your faucet has one.

4. Locate the pin or clip at the top of the valve cartridge and pull it up and out with needle nose pliers. The valve cartridge can't be removed if the pin is in place.

5. Slide the white plastic valve cartridge removal tool that came with your replacement valve cartridge kit onto the valve as far as it will go. Use pliers to grab the plastic removal tool and turn to loosen the cartridge. Pull the valve cartridge straight out to remove it. If you have no plastic removal tool you can find them at any hardware or home improvement store.

Tips Warnings

Moen faucets may vary depending on the age and model. These variations will be slight and consist of the difference between what holds the faucet handle or valve cartridge in place (screw, pin, hex nut). There may be a metal sleeve over the valve and cartridge that slides off easily. No additional tools are required.

Remove any corrosion a wire brush then rinse with clear water. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when using strong chemicals.
