Make Orange Sherbert Ice Cream Cake

Use orange sherbet and angel food cake to create a delicious and attractive ice cream cake that's perfect for a light dessert on a hot summer day or after a heavy meal. Even if you're a novice baker, you can still create an orange sherbet cake that will impress your guests. Top your finished cake with thawed whipped topping or vanilla frosting to give your cake a familiar orange creamsicle flavor.

Instructions

1. Combine 1 box of angel food cake mix with 1 1/4 cups of water in a large mixing bowl. Stir until the batter has a uniform color and texture.

2. Pour the cake batter into a tube pan lightly sprayed with non-stick cooking spray and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 40 minutes. The cake is done when the top looks dry and cracked.

3. Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wired rack for 2 hours.

4. Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan gently with a knife and invert it onto a flat baking sheet. Remove the pan and wait for the cake to cool completely before you continue.

5. Slice the cake horizontally into three layers with a large bread knife.

6. Place one quart of orange sherbet on your counter for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until the sherbet is soft and spreadable.

7. Arrange the bottom layer of the angel food cake on a serving platter and spread half of the orange sherbet onto this layer evenly.

8. Stack the second layer of cake on top of the sherbet layer and spread the remaining sherbet on top of this layer.

9. Press the last layer of the angel food cake gently onto the sherbet and freeze the cake for 1 hour or until the sherbet is firm again.

10. Spread any flavor of frosting or thawed whipped topping over the top and sides of the cake and return it to the freezer until you are ready to cut and serve.

Tips Warnings

You can substitute a different flavor of cake mix for the angel food cake mix, but make sure you follow the directions on the box when preparing the cake. Angel food cake mixes generally require water only, but other cake mixes usually call for eggs, vegetable oil and water.

Decorate your cake with colorful sprinkles or candied orange slices.
