Remove Formica Bathroom Walls

Formica swatch

Formica walls used to be a popular way of decorating the bathroom. Today, more modern techniques are being used, so the removal of the Formica will be required before redecorating. Following a few simple steps will allow removal of the sheets quickly and easily.

Instructions

1. Locate the trim strips used to hold the sheets of Formica on the wall. They are placed over the seam where two pieces of Formica were joined when it was applied.

2. Remove the strips by prying them loose with a hammer and putty knife. Place the edge of the putty knife against the trim and tap the handle with the hammer. Work all the way down the length of the trim strips, tapping the putty knife with the hammer until they are all removed from the Formica.

3. Remove the wallboard starting at the seams. Place the flat bar at the edge of the seam and tap the end of the bar. This will make the bar slide under the sheet of Formica, allowing it to come free from the wall. When an edge has been worked loose all the way across, pull it with your hands.

4. Use the putty knife if the Formica has been glued to the wall. Place the edge of the putty knife at the seam of wallboard and tap the handle with the hammer. Once it slides under the wallboard it will break the glue loose. Work across the top of the sheet and use your hands to pull the board from the wall.

5. Continue using the putty knife or flat bar to remove all the sheets until your walls are Formica-free.

Tips Warnings

Sometimes the Formica is nailed to the wall at the edges and in the center. Prying it loose with the flat bar will allow the board to be removed from the wall.

Removing the Formica will often damage the drywall underneath. It will have to be repaired using drywall joint compound before the new wall can be finished.
