Use a standard hula hoop for this project.
A canopy tent is wonderful fun for children of all ages. Hung above a bed or in a playroom, a tent can be a castle or a cave. For the older child, it is a perfect place to hide from siblings or to sit and read a book. Make a canopy tent from a hula hoop; use one your children have outgrown or purchase one cheaply from a store's dollar section.
Instructions
1. Measure the distance from the height where the hula hoop will hang, to the floor. In most homes, this will be between six and eight feet. Measure the curtain panels to the same length. Cut off the excess fabric.
2. Fold the bottom of the curtain panels 1/2 inch; pin in place. Sew the hem using a 1/4-inch seam.
3. Lay the two curtain panels on top of one another, right sides together. Pin them along one long side. Sew along the pinned side using a 1/4 inch seam. Do not sew through the opening for the curtain rod; this needs to remain open for the hula hoop to pass through. Set the curtain aside.
4. Cut four triangles from fabric to form the top of the tent. Two sides of each triangle should be 30 inches long, and the bottom should be 28.75 inches long; the bottom side of each triangle should bow outward just a bit.
5. Cut a length of fabric 2 inches wide by 5 inches long. Fold it in half with right sides together so it is 1 inch wide by 5 inches long; sew along the long cut edge with a 1/4 inch seam to form a tube. Do not sew the two short ends shut. Turn the tube right side out.
6. Lay one triangle on top of a second, right sides together. Pin and sew along one 30-inch side. Repeat, laying a third triangle on top of the second, right sides together. Lay the tube/strap on the third triangle near the top point; the strap should lie inside the triangle. Fold it in half and line the cut edges up with the triangle point. Pin it in place, then finish with the fourth triangle. Sewing the fourth triangle to the first and third triangle will secure the tube/strap in place and form a small tent.
7. Pin the top of the tent to the top of the curtain, right sides together. Keep in mind, you will be pinning the tent top along the top edge of the opening for the curtain rod.
8. Sew the two pieces together. Keep the stitches as close to the top of the curtain as possible; you want to leave enough room to slide the hula hoop through the curtain-rod opening.
9. Cut the hula hoop with a knife; You only need one cut. Slide the tent onto to the hula hoop, as you would a curtain rod. Tape the hula hoop together again using electrical or packing tape. Adjust the gathers in the tent so that it hangs evenly around the hula hoop.
10. Screw a hook into the ceiling where you want the tent to hang. Hang the tent from the ceiling using the loop of the tube/strap.
