Build A Decking Base On Concrete

A deck adds value to a home.

Concrete is a good foundation for a deck. The concrete surface won't bend under weight from the deck as much as bare earth would. It is easier to build a deck on a concrete foundation than on grass or by putting posts in the ground.

Instructions

1. Cut four planks to serve as the sides of the frame. Two planks will be as long as the concrete area, minus 6 inches. Two planks will be as wide as the concrete, minus 6 inches. The six-inch margin will serve as a step of sorts from the bare earth up to the deck.

2. Fasten the planks together by laying them end to end at a 90-degree angle, with the 2-inch side facing up. Place a metal bracket at the inside corner of this angle and hammer nails through the holes in the brackets

3. Cut planks to fit across the frame to serve as joists. They should fit snugly, so be sure to measure twice and cut once. Put nails through the outer plank into the end of the joists to secure them in place. Use at least three nails on each side.

4. Add a top to this base as you see fit. Perhaps you will use an attractive hard wood to serve as the facade. Perhaps this base is sufficient as is, to serve as the foundation for a prefabricated shed.
