The Basque city of San Sebastian overlooks La Concha Bay.
Basque Country covers an area of about 2,803 square miles in the northwest of Spain. The country has supported generations of sailors, farmers and shepherds, all of which speak a dialect unknown to any other part of the world. As well as its much-lauded emerald green countryside, the landscape of the region is also composed of craggy coastline, mountains and highlands. According to the Totally Spain website, the writer Unamuno described Basque Country as little valleys among mountains.
Mountains
The Basque Mountains are a small mountain range running across the top of Basque Country, between the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains. According to the Peakery website, there are three main mountains in Basque Country, all of which are situated in this range. The tallest, Monte Gorbea, stands at 4,862 feet near the town of Zeanuri. Monte Izarraitz is a 3,369-foot peak near Azkoitia, while the smallest, Monte Pagasarri, stands at 2,208 feet high and is near Santutxu.
Coastline
Northern Basque Country ends with the Atlantic Ocean and forms part of the Bay of Biscay. The Spanish Fiestas website describes this coastline as varying between sheer cliffs, natural harbors and wide beaches. La Concha is a large crescent-shaped bay, overlooked by the bustling port city of San Sebastian. To its east lies the historic harbor town of Hond-arribia, near the French border. West of San Sebastian, according to the Travel Weekly website, is the picturesque fishing port of Mutriku. The cliffs and sandy beach of Saturraran, as well as the Seven Beaches area, are both near Mutriku.
Rivers
According to the University of Colorado, the Ebro River forms part of the Basque Country's southern boundary and is the largest river in Spain. The 45-mile river Nervión runs through the city of Bilbao, where it joins with the Ibaizabal River to form the Estuary of Bilbao. The Leitzaran is another major Basque river that runs for 26 miles from its source in the Leitza municipality of Navarre until it joins with the river Oria. Prior to reaching the sea, the 46-mile Oria is dotted with a number of marsh and wetland habitats.
Other features
The Izki Natural Park, situated in the province of Alava, northwest Basque Country, is notable for being situated on a high plateau and containing a deep limestone gorge and a large natural amphitheater, according to the Walking Holidays in Spain's website.
