Make Follies Costumes

Fake pearls are an inexpensive way to dress up a costume.

Created by Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., the Ziegfeld Follies were a series of revues performed in New York City from 1907 to 1931. They were a combination of vaudeville shows and Broadway musicals and were based on the Folies Bergere shows of Paris. The Ziegfeld Follies revues featured entertainers like W.C. Fields and Fanny Brice as well as the Ziegfield Follies chorus girls who were known for their beauty and elaborate stage costumes, some of which were quite scanty.

Instructions

Making a Sexy Follies Costume

1. Choose a color scheme. The costume should be all one solid color or a combination of two colors like red and black or white and black.

2. Secure the bikini top to your skin with double-sided adhesive bra tape. Since the bikini top is strapless and when dressed as a Follies girl you will probably be dancing, using double-sided adhesive bra tape will keep the bikini top in place while you are performing. Cut strips of the tape, peel off the liners and apply them to your skin where the bikini top will be. Carefully put on the bikini top over the tape and press along the top with your hand so that the tape is locked into place on both sides. If needed, cut more strips, place them under the top and press them with your hand until you feel that your top is completely secure for dancing.

3. Put on the rest of the costume. Slip into the bikini bottoms. Put on the tutu skirt and high heels. The high heels should be closed-toe shoes either without straps or with a T strap. Then add the strings of fake pearls and opera gloves. The opera gloves should reach the middle of your biceps. To prevent the gloves from sliding down, apply some double-sided adhesive bra tape to the inside of each glove around the bicep.

Making a Sweet Follies Costume

4. Choose a color scheme with soft colors such as white and pale pink, pale pink and pale yellow, or pale yellow and white. Plan on the ball gown style dress and the tights being one color while the ribbon, ribbon rosettes and high heels will be in another color as an accent. Notwithstanding the color scheme, remember that the pearls and gloves will be white.

5. Prepare the ribbon. Cut ribbons in sets of three in varying lengths.

6. Sew ribbons on the rosettes for the shoulder. Thread the needle with a length of thread. Sew one set of three ribbons on the underside of one of the rosettes. Repeat with as many rosettes as you desire, but only place them on one shoulder and not both. Pin the rosettes to the dress' shoulder. Stitch them in place. Knot the thread and cut off the excess. Remove the pins.

7. Sew rosettes on the skirt. Place rosettes on the skirt of the dress. Pin them and then stitch them in place. Knot the thread and cut off the excess. Remove the pins.

8. Put on the costume. Put on the dress, the tights, the shoes and finally, the gloves.

Tips Warnings

For a variation on the sweet Follies costume, you could substitute ballet slippers for the high heels. For accessories, you could also add a paper parasol or strings of fake pearls.

For a variation on the sexy Follies costume, you could replace the main accessory, wearing a cape instead of the tutu skirt.
