Shelves & Shelving Systems

Shelves can organize many precious things.

Shelving may be decorative or practical; either way, it is essential to organizing and de-cluttering a home. It may be purchased or constructed. Shelving may be used in kitchens, garages, bedrooms or bathrooms. Does this Spark an idea?

Simple Shelving

Easy shelf units for books or other items can be constructed from 1 inch wood planking. The advantages to making your own is that they may be constructed to suit the size of the items being stored. The disadvantage is that they require at least a small amount of carpentry expertise, the use of a saw, hammer and nails. Extremely easy shelves may be constructed by using 2 inch by 12 inch planking laid across cinder blocks. These require no hammering or nailing. For safety, they should not be stacked more than than three blocks high.

Prefabricated Shelving

Many department stores carry prefabricated shelf units made of press wood or plywood. These are usually easy to assemble and have a nice finish. Used with care, they will last for several years. They should not be over-loaded or allowed to get wet. Other prefabricated shelving units include decorative shelving for holding ornamental items, and bamboo shelving, which is ideal for storing towels or other items attractively in a utility or bathroom. Sturdy plastic shelving with doors can supplement regular kitchen cabinets or keep craft supplies or small tools out of reach of children or pets.

Cubes

Stackable plastic cubes make fast, easy shelving for dorms or child rooms. They come in a variety of colors, and some are constructed so that they may be snapped together. Stackable bins, while not strictly speaking shelving, can also be useful for reorganizing or creating spill-proof storage for pens, pencils, crayons or other items that tend to roll off traditional shelving.

Plastic Shelving

Pre-molded plastic shelves with insertable poles are a good option for storing paint or other potentially messy items. They are inexpensive, easy to wipe clean, and easy to move from room to room or rental to rental. The disadvantage to these is that they must be kept away from heat sources and they are not as sturdy as wooden or metal shelving.

Metal Shelving

Metal shelving can be ideal for a garage or workshop. They are usually easy to wipe clean, will not be damaged by heat or over loading as easily as plastic, and are frequently capable of being disassembled if they need to be moved. The disadvantages to metal shelving is that it may bend if over loaded, and the finish may be corroded if care is not taken about the substances stored on it. Salts and acids can cause severe damage to a set of metal shelves.
