Shelves like this add instant storage and are a design element.
Storage and organization go hand in hand. Rooms look tidier if everything has a place, even if there are lots of things that need a place. Creating additional bookshelves, underbed storage, closet or bathroom storage can often be done in a day or two, depending on how involved the project is. The key is to asses the type of storage you need and what will work best for your lifestyle. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Add shelving to unused space in the closet. Often, there is empty space below coats in a hall closet. Measure the space available, then pick up the needed shelving pieces. These pieces can be bought pre-finished at many hardware and home improvement stores. For added utility, consider putting casters on the bottom of the storage units. The shelves can hold almost anything, from reams of paper to baskets of out-of-season clothing.
2. Organize a utility or broom closet by getting things off the floor. By hanging brooms, dustpans and mops, you open up floor space and do your cleaning tools a favor. Broom straw can bend or break if left standing in the corner, and mops can mildew if they do not get the air they need to dry. Purchase tool hooks and screws to create some cleaning tool storage. The hooks can be used on a wall or on the back of a door.
3. Measure the space under the bed to make some handy under-bed storage. Next, either buy or make drawers to go under the bed. Adding casters or wheels to the bottom of the drawers will make them easier to use. Handles can also be put on. Use this area to store additional linens, towels or other items that simply need a home.
4. Make a rustic shelving unit with cinder blocks and shelving pieces. Put two blocks across from each other on the floor. Place a shelf piece on top of the blocks. To make a taller unit, add more blocks and shelving. Know that anything taller than three blocks high can be unsteady and may tip over. This unit can be painted in any color or left alone.
