Diy Garage Shelving Ideas

Give loose screws a home by installing shelving in your garage.

If your garage is so overrun with tools, gardening supplies and other knickknacks that you can barely squeeze your car inside its walls, it's time to revamp the space. Part of the problem is that you simply have too much stuff in your garage, but you can't tackle that until you have a place to put the things you need. A few simple DIY shelving projects rejuvenate your garage, giving you a place to put the items that matter and a way to sort out the things that don't. Does this Spark an idea?

Kitchen Shelf

Repurpose kitchen storage solutions to free up space in your garage. For example, install a pot rack with metal rails. The durable metal rails serve two purposes. The first is that you can use them as a shelf for holding larger, heavier industrial supplies, like cans of house paint. The second is that you can hang other supplies from the rails on S-hooks. Paint brushes and rollers, for example, sport holes in their handles that allow you to hang them on S-hooks. Stash smaller brushes, screwdrivers and other handheld tools in small galvanized buckets, which you can then hang from the hooks.

Custom Closets

Standing closets are a useful addition to your garage, and you can easily customize the shelving space inside to fit your needs. For example, install bamboo rods across empty spaces in the closet. Use the rods not only for hanging small tools, like trowels and work gloves, but also as spools for holding twine and wire.

Install other small additions to the inside of the closet to increase its storage potential. Glue the lid of a mason or jelly jar to the bottom of a shelf; you can then fill the jar with thumb tacks, screws, nails or other small hardware, and you'll never misplace it. A magnetic strip attached to the back of the closet can hold paint brushes, metal rulers and other small tools, but take care not to stack any storage in front of it.

Pegboard Wall

Installing a pegboard against the wall of your garage grants you almost limitless possibilities as far as storage and customization are concerned. Use pegs to hang larger supplies on the wall, like brooms, rakes and snow shovels; left unorganized, tools like these instantly clutter any garage. Pegboard isn't just for hanging lone objects though. Using mounting brackets, install shelving onto the pegboard. The board's versatility allows you to adjust your shelves as often as you need to without damaging your wall, allowing you to switch out shelves to accommodate larger or smaller supplies.
