Remodel Kitchen And Garage Spaces

A garage or kitchen makeover should focus on controlling clutter.

Upgrades for a kitchen or garage don't have to be costly. Cleaning and getting rid of clutter will go a long way in both areas. Make changes that ensure you'll enjoy spending time in your kitchen or garage. Changes must include developing organizational systems and good storage. Create a neat, efficient kitchen that allows you to move about easily while cooking. Design a garage that leaves plenty of open space around stored vehicles, too. Take time to research how others have upgraded and created good order for these spaces. Borrow their best ideas to revamp yours. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Envision changes for the wall spaces first. Plan to refresh walls with paint color or new material. Add porcelain tile to part of the kitchen wall space, or add bead board paneling to garage walls. Figure out the best ways to upgrade shelving and cabinets to create storage. Measure the wall dimensions in order to sketch a good plan and determine materials to buy.

2. Change overhead lighting. Install recessed lighting in the ceiling of a garage to add overall light or targeted lighting for a workbench space. Use recessed lighting in a kitchen to create an evenly lit space for cooking and cleaning up.

3. Make changes to floor space. Install vinyl flooring or tile on a kitchen floor that blends well with walls, cabinets and counter tops. Select a light, neutral color such as light gray or beige to make the room look bigger. Roll a special flooring compound on a garage floor to give it a new surface. Follow instructions for cleaning the floor first, because oil or grease will prevent a compound floor coating or any type of concrete paint from adhering.

4. Improve windows and doors. Install energy-efficient windows in a kitchen space. Add a greenhouse window over the sink or sliding doors on one wall to bring in more light. Add double-pane windows to an older garage to hold in heat and keep the space cooler in summer. Install steel walk-out doors for the garage and the kitchen with deadbolts.

5. Upgrade storage systems. Build an island bar in the kitchen to store miscellaneous items that are presently taking up countertop space. Use shelves under the bar to hold small baskets and storage bins. Construct one floor-to-ceiling wall of cabinets in the garage to hide all clutter.
