Ideas For Closet Organizers

A well organized closet helps you find what you need without giving you a headache.

Because people -- women in particular -- spend so much time in front of the closet, a well organized closet is a must. The right organization strategies are necessary so picking something from the closet doesn't turn into an aggravating chore each day. A closet may hide items behind its doors, but it shouldn't look any less clean than the rest of your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Preparation

Assess how much space you have in your closet and determine what needs to fit into its confines. If you don't have much storage space in the rest of your home, you may need to fit additional items like an ironing board or sports equipment into your closet. Weed out what you no longer wear. The Style At Home website explains that, "Women wear only about 20 percent of their wardrobes." Exchange unwanted clothes with friends or take them to a nearby charity or thrift store.

Create Sections Using Boxes

Use boxes and baskets to keep socks or less frequently used items out of sight. Use larger boxes to keep seasonal clothes or spare towels in the bottom of your closet. Store fancy heels or sandals in the same way. Use transparent boxes or pretty baskets to store accessories such as shawls or gloves in more visible areas of your closet. The smaller boxes will add charm to the closet and keep clutter items looking neat and tidy.

Use Hooks to Keep Things off the Ground

Attach hooks to the inside of a closet door and keep belts, purses or ties within easy reach. Vary the sizes of hooks: larger ones for your purses and smaller ones for ties or belts. You can also use small hooks as an inventive way to organize necklaces or bracelets. Attach the hooks at different levels for a decorative display of your jewelry inside the closet doors. Good Housekeeping suggests that you mount one hook outside your closet doors and keep the next morning's outfit there for a quicker, tidier morning routine.

Wire Baskets and Shoe Shelves

Connect wire baskets and shelves to free wall space inside your closet. Shoe shelves will keep favorite shoes organized and tucked away at the bottom of the closet. Wire material is usually stain- and scratch-resistant, which is ideal for shoes. Alternatively, opt for a hanging a nylon shoe organizer that displays your shoes vertically. Organize undergarments and socks into wire baskets to keep them tidy but within easy reach.

Extra Tips

Store items that you don't need in your closet elsewhere. Store bulky comforters, sheet sets and backup pillows in boxes or baskets underneath a bed. Store coats on coat hangers attached to an entrance door or wall in the hallway. Use a plain covered laundry basket to hide dirty clothes either inside or outside the closet.
