Cover A Hat Box With Fabric

Covering a hat box with fabric allows you to match your decor.

Covering a hat box with fabric is a good way to repurpose an old battered hat box. Hat boxes can be used as pretty storage containers in your home; cover them with a fabric that you love and matches your living room. Store toys in a child's room or toiletries in a bathroom. Covering a hat box will take less than two hours, and is an easy project to work on while just relaxing or watching TV.

Instructions

Round Hat Boxes

1. Take the cord, if there is one, out of the box. Typically you can simply undo the knot on one end and pull the cord through the hole.

2. Measure around the box, as well as the height of the box, without the lid. Cut a piece of fabric, adding 2 inches to the measurements.

3. Glue one side of the strip of fabric to the hat box. Center it so you have an inch extending at both the top and bottom of the box. Wrap the fabric around the box, gluing every few inches. Fold the bottom inch over the edge of the hat box and glue it to the bottom of the box. Fold the top inch into the box, gluing it down as well.

4. Lay your hat box lid onto a large piece of fabric and draw around it with the fabric pencil, adding 2 inches around the entire lid. Cut it out.

5. Place a few dots of glue around the top of the lid and place it down on the wrong side of the fabric. Pull the extra few inches of fabric up and glue it inside the hat box lid.

6. Use a sharp craft knife to cut a slit where the cord holes are. Thread the cord back through the slit and holes and knot them.
