Bifold doors
improve any closet's accessibility.
Sliding doors always leave a portion of the closet obstructed. A better solution is to use bifold doors that reveal the whole space by effortlessly sliding to each side. These doors move in two tracks installed in the top of the door frame and on the floor. Installing the bottom track to concrete is the same as installing it on wood except you must use fasteners designed for concrete applications. Any closet door in your home can be converted to bifold doors with a little work. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Lay the doors on the floor in the position they will be installed in the door frame. On the outside of the doors - the jam side - measure and mark with a measuring tape and pencil, the inner edge 11 inches from the bottom and 7 inches from the top.
2. Position the edge of a hinge on the lower marking with its knuckle facing back and flush to the edge. Drill pilot holes with a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the mounting screws, through the hinge screw holes. Fasten the hinge to the door with a screwdriver and the screws provided. Repeat this process to secure the top hinge to the door.
3. Align the second door with the hinges so that the two doors are aligned together. Drill pilot holes then screw the hinges to the second door. Repeat this process to secure the hinges to the second pair of doors.
4. Position the track hardware pivot plates on the top and bottom of the doors in the locations specified by the manufacturer. Secure the hardware to the door by drilling pilot holes then securing with the provided screws. Check that everything is positioned properly.
5. Measure the diameter of the door frame at the top. Measure and mark the track for this length and cut along the line with a hacksaw. Slide the top track hangers onto the track. Position the track 1 inch from the front edge of the door and secure to the top of the door frame with the screws provided.
6. Position the floor brackets next to the door jam in the exact location specified by the door manufacturer. Mark the mounting holes on the floor and drill holes in these markings with a masonry drill bit the diameter recommended by the concrete screw manufacturer.
7. Lift the doors up to the top track and insert the jamb side hook into the top pivot plate socket. When the pin is in the pivot plate, push the lever on the side of the socket to lock it in place. Slide the pin from the track hanger into the locking arm on the leading door. Twist the arm to secure it to the track hanger. Close the doors and move them forward to catch the floor bracket with the bottom pivot pin.
8. Close the doors and align the floor brackets with the pre-drilled holes in the concrete floor. Fasten the brackets to the floor with concrete screws. Align the doors so that when they are closed the gaps around them are even and tighten the pivot sockets on the end of the track with a wrench.
9. Mount door pulls 36 inches from the floor to each leading door. Drill a hole through the door and push the hardware mounting bolt through the hole. Turn the door pull on the bolt until it is tight.
