Sew An Over The Door Shoe Holder

Avoid a shoe pileup in your entryway or closet.

A large, messy pile of shoes in your entryway not only creates a tripping hazard, it also costs you valuable minutes every morning when you must dig for a matching pair of shoes before you can leave the house. Save yourself time and a stubbed toe or two by getting your collection of shoes under control with a homemade over-the-door shoe organizer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut one piece of felt 20 inches by 70 inches for the main body of the organizer. Make a small chalk mark every 11 inches along both 70-inch edges. Start making the marks from the same end each time so you have an extra 4 inches at one end. Draw lines connecting corresponding marks to divide the length of the felt in six 11-by-20-inch sections and one 4-by-20-inch section, which will be at the top of the organizer.

2. Cut six 20-by-9-inch strips of felt to create pockets with. Pin each strip to the body fabric with the bottom 20-inch edge of the strip lined up with one of the chalk lines drawn across the body piece. The last strip lines up with the bottom edge of the body piece.

3. Sew each strip of felt in place along its side and bottom edges with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins as you sew.

4. Sew vertical seams up each strip from the bottom to the top edge every 5 inches along its width to divide each one into four pockets.

5. Fold the top edge of the organizer down to the back 2 inches. Sew along the folded edge with a 1-3/4-inch seam allowance, and again with a quarter-inch seam allowance.

6. Measure the width of your over-the-door wreath hangers. Cut two slits the same length as the hangers' width half an inch down from the top edge of the organizer. Make a slit 1-1/2 inches in from each side edge. Hang the organizer over the door using the wreath hangers.
