Miscellaneous Tricks
1. Remove the doors on your closet. Sliding and accordion-style doors don't allow for extra storage space. Hanging a sheer curtain or fabric panel instead gives you more room to enter the closet and makes the adjacent room seem bigger.
2. Clean out your closet to make room. Store out-of-season clothing in garment bags or boxes in a storage room or in the attic. Rearrange your clothing to maximize space. Hang more items if you have plenty of hanging space. Fold what you can if your closet is short on hanging rods but has plenty of shelving.
3. Place an organizing system in your closet. Professionally installed systems require little work, since teams usually install them. For a quick and economical solution, replace open space on the closet floor or top shelf with portable racks, drawer bins or shoe cubbies. Decide where everything will go beforehand so you purchase no more or less organizers than you need.
4. Hang an organizer on the back of your closet door for small accessories such as shoes, belts or purses.
Expanding Space With Curtains
5. Expand your closet with space from your room. Remove the door. Hang curtain rods from the ceiling following the closet's perimeter.
6. Drill the rod hardware into joists in the ceiling. Assemble per manufacturer instructions. Hang two or three curtain panels from the rods, depending on the shape of your closet.
7. Place portable shelving or organizing systems along the inside perimeter of your new space.
