Sliding Closet Door Installation

Sliding closet doors are a space-saving alternative to standard double doors.

Sliding closet doors are ideal for long, shallow closets and in small rooms where space is at a premium. For the best results, these doors should be painted or stained, if necessary, before installation. Hardware should be removed or masked before painting to prevent ruining the roller mechanisms. Installing the tracks and doors requires hand tools and the hardware in the installation kit that accompanies the doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the depth of the closet door header. The header is the top portion of the opening for the closet. This usually is slightly more than 4 inches. Mark the center of the header at both ends of the opening with a pencil. Centering the track at each end ensures that both closet doors will stay within the framed opening.

2. Connect the marks on each end of the opening using a straightedge and a pencil.

3. Mark the location for the floor track, if necessary, with a plumb bob. Hold the end of the plumb bob's string against the line on the header. Wait for the bob to stop moving and mark the spot on the floor under its tip. Do this at each end of the closet door opening.

4. Connect the marks with a straightedge and pencil in the same manner as the header.

5. Center the upper track on the line drawn on the header. Pre-drilled holes in the tracks are centered so the line should be visible through them. Hold the track in place and attach it to the top of the opening with the screws provided in the mounting kit. Mount the floor track, if necessary, in the same manner.

6. Hang the doors on the upper track. The rollers on the upper part of the doors should drop into hooked channels of the upper track. There will be two channels on each track. Install the first door on the rear channel. Install the second door on the front channel.

7. Lower the guides for the bottom channel, if necessary, into position and tighten them. The lower guides should fit into the bottom channel but left slightly above the floor to prevent binding.
