Pegboard Tips

Pegboard provides an out-of-the-way place for hanging items, such as tools and cords. It can be installed in a variety of ways; however, if it isn't installed correctly, it can collapse. Pegboard should be installed onto a solid frame of wood that is firmly attached to the wall. If you are planning to install pegboard, you should know about the tools and materials available for a successful project. Does this Spark an idea?

Frame

Use a stud finder to locate the wall framing, and mark the studs with a pencil. An electrical wire finder will help ensure you don't hit any electrical wires in the wall.

Use 1-by-4 lumber to build a frame for the pegboard. Rather than assemble the frame on the floor in one piece, attach each piece onto the wall using 3-inch wood screws until you have a rectangle the size of one sheet of pegboard--4 feet by 8 feet. Place vertical supports across the center of the frame, spaced 12 inches apart, to complete it.

Attach the pegboard to the wood frame using 3/4-inch wood screws. The peg board should not bulge or bow in any area. This could cause the materials that are stored on the pegboard to become unstable. Consider installing corner trim to trim out your pegboard, giving a decorative effect that will help dress up the area in which the pegboard is installed.

Pegboard hooks come in a variety of lengths. Choose shorter hooks for heavier objects and longer hooks for lighter items. Consider purchasing rubber tips to go on the hook ends.

Pegboard comes in two colors: plain brown and shiny white. The plain brown pegboard will be easier to stain, but the shiny white will resist stains and can be wiped off more easily.
