His & Hers 6 Foot Closet Ideas

Women will need more shoe storage in their closets as they often have more shoes than men.

Closets that are 6 foot in size don't provide a great deal of space for an individual or for a couple. However, smart design ideas can make this space much more usable and manageable. When it comes to the storage of clothing and accessories, men and women have different needs. Even a space as limited as a 6 foot closet can meet those varying needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Double Racks

Maximize the amount of clothes you can hang with an upper and lower closet rod. One rod should hang at the top of the closet and the other rod should hang across the middle. For a man's closet, a pullout trouser rack should hang in lieu of a second rod. A woman's closet will need an additional rod as she needs to hang clothes in a broader range, from skirts to dresses to pants.

Mounted Racks

Both men and women have items they need to hang from hooks, and even a 6 foot closet can accommodate those separate needs. For example, men need some sort of tie rack and belt rack. Women need to hang up handbags and scarves. Thus a man's closet should have a tie and belt rack mounted to the side panel, along one of the closet rods. A woman's closet will need a purse and scarf rack with hook spaces mounted wider apart.

Shoe Racks and Shelves

Since a woman usually has more shoes than a man, a comprehensive shoe rack should take up the lower portion of her closet under the clothing hanging off the second rod of clothes. This shoe rack should have several rows stacked on top of each other to accommodate several pairs of shoes. Ideally the rack should be on wheels so that a woman can easily pull it forward to examine shoe options and push it back when she wants it out of sight. Shelves should take up the lower portion of a man's closet, allowing him the freedom of storing shoes, sports equipment, hats and other items.
