Assemble Hutches

Hutch storage units used in dining rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and offices are usually placed against walls. A hutch comprises a bottom cabinet and top shelf unit. The cabinet usually has drawers and shelves enclosed by doors, and the top unit is usually enclosed by doors. Although designs vary by their use, and by manufacturer, hutches assembled at home require the same basic steps. You will need someone to help hold the pieces while you are assembling the hutch. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Bottom Cabinet

1. Remove the hutch components from the box. Place the screws, brackets and mounting plates in a bowl or cup so they are not misplaced. Examine the screws to determine what kind of screwdriver or Allen wrench will be required for assembly.

2. Locate the positions for the drawer sliders. These are usually on one side of the cabinet and on one side of a vertical divider. Screw the drawer sliders into the appropriate holes on these two panels. Note the position of the drawer sliders so you put them in the right order while assembling the unit.

3. Screw the metal support brackets to both side panels and vertical dividers.

4. Lay the top of the cabinet on the floor, resting on its front edge. Hold it in place then screw both side panels to the underside of the cabinet top. Then screw the vertical dividers to the cabinet top.

5. Screw the bottom shelf to the cabinet sides and vertical dividers. Then screw the back legs to the cabinet sides.

6. Lift the cabinet carefully and place it upright on the floor. Screw the bottom support to both side panels.

7. Screw the hinges and handles to the doors. Screw the handles to the drawer fronts.

8. Assemble the drawers. In most cases these use plastic backs with clips. Simply clip the sides of the drawers into the plastic clips. Other units use metal brackets, which are screwed to the back and sides. Then slide the bottom of the drawer into the grooves on the sides. Clip or screw the drawer to the drawer front.

9. Slide the drawers into the drawer sliders. Insert the door hinges into the appropriate holes in the base and underside of the cabinet top.

10. Place the shelf mounting brackets onto the side and vertical support. Then place the shelves onto the brackets from the back of the cabinet.

11. Mount the back plywood panel onto the side supports. It should fit neatly into the grooved ends. Then tack the back into place using a hammer and finishing nails.

Top Shelf Unit

12. Screw the support brackets to the side panels. Then place them on the floor.

13. Stand the top shelf on its front edge on the floor. Hold it in place. Then screw the side panels to the top shelf.

14. Screw the bottom shelf to the side panels.

15. Screw the two support brackets to the bottom of the shelf unit. Note that these extend beyond the bottom shelf. These are used to secure the top and bottom sections together.

16. Carefully lift the top shelf unit onto the top of the cabinet. Hold it in place. Then screw the support brackets to the back of the bottom cabinet.

17.Slide the hutch against the wall. Move the unit carefully, as the brackets holding the top shelves to the cabinet are not designed to support horizontal movements.

18. Install the shelves and any doors into the top shelf unit using the same methods as you did in the bottom unit.
